Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is the #1 children’s hospital in Illinois.
It has won several accolades over the years such as 2022-23 U.S.News & World Report rankings of the Best Children’s Hospitals, the Magnet® recognition five times by The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, Forbes’ Best Mid-sized Employers, and the Lantern Award.
It is the largest pediatric provider in the region with a 140-year legacy of excellence, catering to kids, teenagers, and young adults throughout Illinois and the surrounding areas.
So when it announced its plans to expand in Schaumburg, it made a buzz in this northwest community. Schaumburg is home to 73,392 people. It is one of the best places to live in Illinois.
Now let’s get down to business. Why is Lurie Children’s Hospital planning to open a new outpatient center in Schaumburg?
Why is Lurie Children's Hospital planning a new facility in Schaumburg
a. Lurie’s lease with Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights expires
The lease agreement that Lurie has with Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights ends in September.
Hospital administrators chose the new site in Schaumburg because Lurie lacks a collaboration agreement with NorthShore University Health System, which owns Northwest.
Lurie will prolong its lease in Arlington Heights until the new building opens and will simultaneously close the offices in Hoffman Estates and Huntley as part of the move to the new site.
b. Realigning outpatient services in the northwest suburbs
Currently, Lurie has three outpatient locations in Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, and Huntley.
The new facility in Schaumburg would replace these three locations, providing a single, larger location for patients in the area.
This would help to improve efficiency and coordination of care, and it would also make it easier for patients to access the services they need.
c. improve healthcare access
This bigger facility, according to Lurie, will generate economies of scale while still meeting the urgent need for outpatient pediatric care.
The hospital reported it has run out of room at its satellite facilities so it wants to avoid insufficient patient care.
The population of the northwest suburbs is growing rapidly, and with this growth comes an increased demand for healthcare. The new facility in Schaumburg would help to meet this demand by providing more access to high-quality pediatric care.
The new facility in Schaumburg would allow Lurie to expand its specialty services in the northwest suburbs.
This would include services such as cardiology, neurology, and surgery.
These services are currently only available at Lurie's main campus in Chicago, so the new facility would make them more accessible to patients in the northwest suburbs.
Now what will this new center provide to Schaumburg?
What will the Schaumburg site provide?
Lurie Children’s Hospital will build a three-story, 70,000-square-foot facility at 3 Hillcrest Boulevard in Schaumburg.
Lurie is in contract to buy the Schaumburg property for $2.6 million from a partnership between GSP Development president Larry Debb and Marc Realty principals.
First, this facility will have 40 exam and treatment rooms for pediatric general and specialty care, diagnostic imaging, and cardiac testing.
Hematology, neuro-oncology, and pediatric oncology are Lurie Children's areas of expertise. So the hospital also intends to establish a better ambulatory infusion center in Schaumburg.
The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital's Blood Bank Laboratory provides transfusion services for a group of patients.
So a broader blood bank storage that is furnished with all essential equipment is one of the amenities in Schaumburg.
Of course, the center won’t be complete without a pharmacy that will stock all essential medicines, equipment and medical paraphernalia needed by patients.
And lastly, the Schaumburg center will provide surface parking lots for 250 vehicles.
How the new hospital will help Schaumburg residents
This new outpatient center in Schaumburg brings forth great benefit to the residents. Considering that Lurie’s Children Hospital is renowned for excellence in healthcare services, residents in Schaumburg will have better resources in catering their medical needs, especially for children. They won’t also need to travel away from the city just to have their children checked and treated.
Aside from boosting healthcare accessibility, this new development will also generate job growth and increase of migration - making Schaumburg increasingly popular for renters and investors.
