Today, we dive into the exciting $645-million expansion of the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, set to transform the Lakeview community.
The Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, which was founded in 1897, runs a Level I trauma center and a Level III perinatal center. Offering a wide range of medical specializations, Advocate Illinois Masonic is renowned nationally for its medical knowledge, application of cutting-edge technology, and commitment to patient safety, quality, and service.
Why is Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Lakeview planning an eight-year, $645 million renovation?
Reasons for the Renovation
This hospital will be renovated for the following purposes: a) to add patient privacy, b) to modernize women’s health spaces, and c) expand the outpatient cancer services.
1. Adding patient privacy
The hospital's mission goes beyond just medical care—it's about providing comfort too. Recognizing the need for increased patient privacy, the hospital plans to reduce its bed capacity from 397 to 326, ensuring most rooms are private and single-occupancy. This move aims to create more space for patients and their families to recover comfortably.
2. Modernizing spaces for women's health
In line with modern demands, Advocate Illinois Masonic is tearing down outdated buildings, including a century-old structure.
Dr. Jude Duval, director of maternal fetal medicine at Masonic said, "Having a modernized Women's Health facility would afford patients to deliver their newborn in this neighborhood and not travel away from families and friends."
Illinois Masonic President Susan Nordstrom Lopez stated: “With the completion of this massive project, our campus will foster an environment that represents the excellent care our physicians and team members provide. We must ensure our infrastructure stays at the forefront of health care innovation and modernization. This expansion allows us to increase access and continue to serve our community at the top-tier level it deserves.”
3. Expanding outpatient cancer services
The expansion includes six state-of-the-art operating rooms and 18 prep and recovery rooms in the Center for Advanced Care. This 38,000-square-foot space aims to create a unified platform for patients and doctors, enhancing accessibility to cutting-edge interdisciplinary clinics.
The grand plan includes the construction of a new four-story addition to the Center for Advanced Care, a five-story bed tower, and the removal of three outdated buildings. The project, slated for completion in 2030, aims to bring top-tier healthcare services to the Lakeview community.
The Center for Advanced Care, opened in 2015, has already been a game-changer. Enhancing patient and family satisfaction, it caters to three medical specialties—cancer care, digestive health, and outpatient surgery services.
In 2021, this new facility for outpatient physical therapy and sports medicine and a five-story parking garage was finished. It provides comprehensive medical diagnostic and intervention services for infants and toddlers, comprehensive treatment for children with autism, a home-based behavioral psychology program, pediatric rehabilitation services, and family and sibling support for infants through teens. It includes a rock-climbing wall, gymnastics equipment for physical therapy and gross motor skills development, and group therapy rooms.
The Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center has also expanded the Center for Advanced Care. Aside from adding operating rooms and prep and recovery rooms, there are now conference rooms, a café, and a library of health-related resources inside the site.
On the ground floor of the Center for Advanced Care building will be the hospital’s Breast Center, which offers mammography and breast ultrasounds.
The last part of this renovation project is a new vertical expansion tower with added bed space. The L-shaped addition will sit on top of both hospital buildings. With the addition of four more stories, the complex's total height will be about 241 feet, and it will be similarly covered in metal panels, glass curtain walls, a sizable mechanical penthouse, and green roofs.
Conclusion
The Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center project could finish by June 2030, upon approval from the Illinois State Board. It is also expected to generate $1.5 billion in economic activity for Chicago.
The Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center's renovation isn't just about healthcare; it's a game-changer for the Lakeview community. This transformative project will likely attract more residents, increase property values, and contribute to the overall prosperity of the area.
